Physical Wellbeing

Physical health is as an essential part of the overall health of an individual, which includes everything from physical, emotional and psychological wellbeing. With the pressures of everyday life and the demands of work and family commitments; it is easy to neglect our physical health and we do so at a cost.

A poor diet which lacks essential nutrients, insufficient exercise and poor quality sleep all have a negative impact on our physical, emotional and psychological resilience and diminish our overall sense of wellbeing.

Learning to manage stress by developing healthy coping strategies, minimising unhealthy behaviours such as smoking or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol positive can have an immediate positive impact on our physical health.

Investing in maintaining our physical health also boosts our immune system and helps us to fight off illness and injury and can often help us to have a faster and better recovery when we do become unwell.

The Scottish Government recommend that to maintain health, you should aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity on most days of the week. Moderate intensity is the same as brisk walking, cycling at a regular pace or swimming.
It might not be obvious, but being physically inactive can be a big risk to health. For example, physical inactivity is now the most common risk factor for coronary heart disease (CHD) in Scotland - this is more than smoking or any other known risk factor. Physical inactivity is also linked with a whole host of conditions, including Type II diabetes, obesity, stroke, osteoporisi and some types of cancer. On the other hand, taking more physical activity can have a range of benefits, including helping to:

  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Promote mental wellbeing
